Bush's Black Book

George W Bush has published his unrepentant memoirs.  We can all enjoy the reminiscences of the man who took over a, by and large, internationally respected nation and turned it into the most hated country in the world. A country whose citizens abroad were reduced, like St Peter, to denying who they were.  The number of 'Canadian' expats grew rapidly during the Iraqi war.

Bush is not a subtle man, that at least can be said in his favour.  He always clearly stated that his policy was America first, and he would do anything to protect his country's interests.   It's a position he remains proud of in retirement.   But let's list what he sacrificed to get what we wanted.
  • The United Nations - By ignoring all the mechanisms and processes set up by the international community and acting unilaterally, Bush undermined the UN's authority.  We know know that the USA will accept its rulings only if it suits them.
  • Human rights -  In the country which likes to think of itself as the cradle of liberal thinking, he institutionalised torture and imprisonment without trial.
  • Relationships with other countries  - He established a USA known for its blatant disinterest in the general interest of the world at large and in the needs of the other nations with which it shares the planet.

God bless America and to hell with everyone else.    Is this a way to a better world?
